Painting Practice

Trying new techniques here.  Did this because :icona3dkid: said that I need more confidence with my lines.  So I figured, maybe I could fare better without evil lines?

Unlike usual, I didn't even sketch or draft this in anyway.  I just had the picture in my head and started painting, skin first.  This immediately broke the construction of the figure but I think I did pretty well fixing it in the end.  Also, the lack of sketching immediately cut down my PSD file size from 500MB+ to just 100MB now, which is great!  Although I'm still a n00b and find it hard to draw by painting first, I feel that it's way less painful than drafting and linearting.

Who knows, I might just do this from now on ^_^

Stats: character is Rollo in his very first appearance in my stories.  This is before he becomes Rune as well before the other picture of him wearing the white t-shirt.  Of course, it's also in this first novel that sweet flannel jacket got pretty beat up and that's why he'd get the other shirt with hoodie thing later lol.

PS: Btw, the flannel hoodie is inspired by Antoine Doinel's Flannel Jacket in 400 blows.  I always see it as blue though other people say (and maybe in reality as well) it's actually a red flannel.  I don't know, the movie is in black and white.  What do you think?  Am I the only one seeing it as blue?!

Like the direction your going mate! I actually have to say how good it looks just painting directly! Of course, since I'm not good at painting, I don't know how much clout I have, but I really like the strokes you did for the hair. The left hand is also looking pretty good!

My other suggestion would be to use something like lasso tool when making borders for your paints. Then on the above layer, use "clipping mask". That way you can have clean borders for clothing and such. :)
